Somerset Gardens Volunteers Cancer Support Group

What we do

A former Primary Care Macmillan Cancer Nurse and a small group of volunteers with personal experience of cancer first started the group in August 2003. Since then it has been developed as a joint partnership venture between Macmillan Cancer Support, Haringey Council, Haringey Teaching Primary Care NHS Trust and Somerset Gardens Volunteers Cancer Support Group (SGV).

The key aims and objectives of SGV are:

  • To provide information, support and complementary therapies for all people affected by cancer in Haringey and the neighbouring boroughs.
  • To maintain a good relationship and work closely and in co-operation with Health Professionals to ensure that our service is supportive of the cancer treatments provided by the National Health Service.
  • The promotion of good health and the advancement of education of the public by raising awareness of cancer, the prevention, diagnoses, treatments and sources of help.
  • To increase awareness amongst Haringey public of the cancer services presently available and to make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by cancer.
  • To ensure that the group reflects and is accessible and welcoming to the local diverse community.
  • To organise fund raising events to help in achieving these aims.
